Beyon, Bahrain’s largest communications and information technology company, has appointed Aecom as the master planner for its ambitious Digital City project, which is set to be developed with an investment of $700 million. The project aims to create a premier technology and innovation ecosystem in the Hamala area.
Aecom’s role involves comprehensive planning and design, focusing on the integration of commercial, technological, and lifestyle components, including landscaped open spaces and essential urban amenities. The master planning will also prioritize the seamless integration of the Digital City within Bahrain’s existing and proposed transport infrastructure.
The Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA) of Bahrain will play an active role in ensuring that the Digital City aligns with the country’s broader urban expansion strategy. This includes efficient internal traffic systems and connections to main transport networks, ensuring the area is optimally planned for future growth.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony at Beyon’s headquarters, attended by Andrew Kvaalseth, CEO of Beyon; Faisal Al Jalahma, Chairman of the Digital City Development Company; Engineer Ahmed Al Khayat, CEO of Bahrain’s UPDA; and David Border, Aecom’s Head of Buildings + Places in Bahrain.
Al Jalahma highlighted that Aecom’s appointment is a crucial step toward realizing the Digital City’s vision of becoming a thriving technological hub. The project is designed to attract foreign direct investment in technology, commerce, and research and development, ultimately creating high-value jobs for the future.
Al Khayat emphasized the importance of integrating the Digital City with Bahrain’s broader infrastructure plans to ensure its long-term viability. He noted that the project aligns with UPDA’s land-use strategy and will support trade exchange, business growth, and the creation of high-value job opportunities.
The development will also include a multimodal transportation network, featuring an automated tram system and extensive landscaped open spaces, reinforcing sustainability at the core of the project.
Border expressed Aecom’s honor in being entrusted with the master planning of the Digital City and reiterated their focus on sustainable urban design, efficient transport integration, and creating a dynamic, people-centered environment that fosters innovation and collaboration.
Beyon’s Digital City project is expected to establish Bahrain as a leading digital and innovation hub in the region, setting new benchmarks for sustainable, tech-driven urbanization and contributing to the Kingdom’s long-term economic and technological growth.
