MTN Group has entered into a partnership with video software company Synamedia to develop a new online streaming platform aimed at transforming video consumption across Africa. The platform, which will utilize cloud-based technology, is designed to deliver linear television and on-demand video tailored to local audiences.
The service will support both fixed and mobile networks and is expected to offer both subscription-based and ad-supported content, with targeted advertising options. MTN aims to provide a curated content strategy for each African country, adapting to local cultures, languages, and viewing preferences to ensure maximum relevance and audience engagement.
Selorm Adadevoh, MTN’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the opportunity to reshape video consumption on the continent with high-quality, accessible, and locally relevant content. He also emphasized that the partnership would leverage cutting-edge technology and customer insights to enhance entertainment experiences and promote digital inclusion.
This move positions MTN in direct competition with major international players like Netflix and South Africa’s MultiChoice, the latter of which is currently undergoing an acquisition process by French media giant Canal+.
