The American University in Dubai (AUD) has unveiled two new programs aimed at enhancing the UAE’s capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and gaming, aligning with the country’s ambitious plans to lead globally in these fields. The Bachelor of Science in Game Design and Development and a new concentration in AI in Business were announced at the 2025 Education for Employment Conference, held under the theme ‘Innovate & Play: Navigating the Future of AI & Gaming.’
The conference gathered experts from academia and industry to discuss the intersection of academic innovation and emerging technologies, focusing on the burgeoning digital economy. Dr. Kyle Long, AUD’s president, highlighted the UAE’s visionary leadership, noting the country’s pioneering move to appoint the first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Omar Sultan Al Olama, who is also an AUD graduate.
A key highlight of the event was a panel discussion moderated by Sophie Boutros, Executive Director of the Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication (MBRSC), with insights from Modhar Khan, Regional Manager of AI MENA at SLB, Faisal Kazim, Director of Future Foresight at Dubai Future Foundation, and Dr. Assaad Farah, Dean of AUD’s School of Business.
The Bachelor of Science in Game Design and Development is aligned with the Dubai Program for Gaming 2033, an initiative launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The program aims to position Dubai among the top 10 cities globally in the gaming industry, generating 30,000 new jobs in the sector. Kazim emphasized the versatility of game development skills, noting that game engines are now driving innovation in various sectors, including film, television, and real estate.
As for AI, Khan praised Dubai’s efforts in creating a culture of innovation, positioning it as a leader in AI development. Dr. Farah outlined the new Bachelor of Business Administration in AI in Business, which responds to the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. He described the program as bridging technical AI with strategic decision-making to prepare future business leaders.
The event also featured interactive workshops on AI and gaming technologies, led by Sandy Hanna, Creative Director at Publicis Groupe, and Dr. Iyad AlSabouni, Program Coordinator of the Game Design and Development program.
Launching in Fall 2025, the new programs will equip students with the skills needed for future roles in these rapidly evolving fields. Boutros of MBRSC concluded, emphasizing the school’s leadership in media education and its new role in advancing game design education. The game design program is accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and is awaiting approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
