Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, through the Government Digital Transformation Programme “Tahawul”, has introduced a new Digital Accessibility Guideline aimed at ensuring equitable access to digital government services for all citizens. This initiative is aligned with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes improving the quality of government services and promoting universal accessibility.
The guideline focuses on fostering digital inclusion, particularly for persons with disabilities and the elderly, enabling them to access and benefit from digital government services. By promoting the adoption of global best practices in digital accessibility, the guideline aims to support mobile and web application developers in creating platforms that are user-friendly and accessible to all.
The guideline is designed for mobile and web development teams in both public and private sectors, targeting professionals such as project managers, UI/UX designers, software developers, digital content writers, accessibility specialists, and quality engineers. It also provides direction for senior management and decision-makers focused on ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities.
With the goal of integrating accessibility from the outset of development, the guideline offers a comprehensive set of instructions for developers to implement accessibility features in mobile applications and websites. It includes methods for assessing accessibility compliance and ensuring that digital platforms are designed to meet the needs of all users, particularly persons with disabilities.
Beyond the government sector, the guideline also promotes the broader principle of digital inclusion, encouraging the design of universally usable products. It reinforces global best practices in accessibility, ensuring that Oman remains in line with international advancements that prioritize user-centric digital services.
The Digital Accessibility Guideline serves as a strategic framework to help government entities in Oman achieve comprehensive digital transformation. By ensuring equal access to digital services and information, the initiative supports national priorities of strengthening digital inclusion and advancing sustainable development.
