Omani Study Finds Mobile-Assisted Learning Improves Vocabulary and Speaking Skills

A study conducted in Oman has found that mobile-assisted learning techniques significantly enhance vocabulary and speaking skills among English language learners. The research, led by Dr. Abdullah bin Humaid Abdullah al Abri from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences Nizwa, examined the use of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tools in classrooms.

The study revealed that students using mobile platforms demonstrated improved lexical fluency and oral performance compared to those taught using traditional methods. Teachers also expressed positive views on the flexibility and effectiveness of MALL tools, highlighting their potential to enhance language teaching practices.

In addition to improving language skills, the study found that MALL created a more student-centered environment, encouraging participation from learners who were typically hesitant to speak in class. Qualitative data indicated that students were more engaged and motivated when using mobile tools for vocabulary acquisition and speaking practice.

The research, titled “Exploring Learning-Oriented Assessment in Enhancing Students’ Lexical Fluency through MALL,” was published in the journal Education and Information Technologies. The study was a collaborative effort with Dr. Fatemeh Ranjbaran Madiseh from Sultan Qaboos University and Dr. Mostafa Morady Moghaddam from Shahrood University of Technology in Iran.

The project won top honors in the PhD category of the 11th National Research Award, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, under the Education and Human Resources field. Dr. Abri expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “This acknowledgment motivates me to continue pursuing innovative projects that contribute to language learning and education.”
