Iraq and Meta Discuss Fiber Optic Expansion to Boost Internet Services

Iraq’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, met with representatives from Meta Platforms, a leading US-based technology company, on Wednesday to discuss the installation of a fiber optic cable network across Iraq. The initiative aims to enhance telecommunications and internet services throughout the country.

During the meeting in Baghdad, both parties explored opportunities for collaboration in key areas such as publishing regulations, digital transformation, and personal security. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) emphasized the Iraqi government’s commitment to advancing digital transformation and automation across various sectors, including banking and government services.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of organizing joint workshops to improve coordination in managing communication platforms effectively.

Meta, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, is the parent company of several major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Messenger, and WhatsApp. It is one of the top five technology giants in the US alongside Google, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft. In 2022, Meta allocated $35.3 billion to research and development, making it the third-largest global spender in this area.
