Egypt has launched the ‘Memory of the City’ mobile application, an interactive platform designed to explore Cairo’s rich heritage through maps, stories, and information on the city’s history, architecture, and streets. The app documents locations tied to Egypt’s icons and pioneers, explains the origins of street names across governorates, and highlights architecturally significant buildings.
Minister of Culture Ahmed Hanno described the app as more than a digital tool—it is a means to preserve Egyptian identity, document the collective memory of cities, and engage future generations by blending respect for history with contemporary perspectives.
Developed by the National Organization for Urban Harmony in partnership with the Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC), the app’s launch took place at the Cairo Opera House, attended by key officials including Mohamed Abu Saada and Osama El-Gohary.
Originating from a 2017 Ministry of Culture initiative to document street origins and notable historical figures’ residences, the mobile app represents a natural progression of this project. Osama El-Gohary emphasized the app’s user-friendly, interactive design, aiming to offer users a fresh perspective on their city while making heritage and architecture more accessible to youth and enthusiasts.
