Bahrain Ministry of Sustainable Development Hosts Virtual Workshop on SDG Data Reporting with ITU and UN

The Ministry of Sustainable Development in Bahrain, in collaboration with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), recently held a national virtual workshop focused on methodologies for calculating and reporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators overseen by the ITU. The event brought together senior officials, specialists, and statisticians from key national bodies including the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, and the Information and eGovernment Authority.

This workshop is part of a broader series aimed at updating Bahrain’s national SDG indicator data and strengthening institutional capabilities to align with international statistical standards, reflecting the country’s ongoing commitment to improving data quality.

Discussions centered on critical SDG indicators under ITU custodianship, particularly those related to digital connectivity and access to information and communication technologies. These indicators track progress in internet usage, mobile network coverage, and digital inclusion—key factors in bridging the digital divide.

ITU representatives, including Mr. Adel Darwish, Director of the Regional Office for Arab States, highlighted the importance of accurate and timely data in driving innovation, informed policymaking, and national development. They praised Bahrain’s proactive efforts in producing internationally comparable data and advancing its statistical infrastructure, while emphasizing the need for continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure data reliability and support the Kingdom’s progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
