Amid rapid digital changes, TikTok organized the TikTok Family Academy panel in Casablanca, Morocco, aiming to boost families’ digital literacy and equip parents with tools to better support their teenagers online.
Held at WeMeet, Anfa Place, the event brought together experts in cybersecurity, digital well-being, and media literacy to emphasize the importance of open dialogue between parents and teens.
Psychotherapist Meryem Bahri, part of TikTok’s Minnet Sack, highlighted TikTok’s development of over 15 family pairing tools—such as “Time Away” and “Wind Down” modes—that encourage healthier screen habits and help parents manage the content their teens see. These tools serve as conversation starters, fostering meaningful discussions about digital use.
Bahri also stressed culturally sensitive approaches, noting the importance of adapting resources to the local MENA context.
Media literacy consultant Meryem Zakhaji underscored the ubiquity of platforms like TikTok among youth and encouraged awareness and open communication within families. She emphasized that since TikTok is an integral part of teens’ lives, parents should engage proactively rather than seek to restrict.
Both speakers agreed that parental roles should shift from control to guidance, with Bahri stating that parents should accompany their teens on social media rather than impose strict rules or attempt to shield them.
