Nepal Delisted from Ookla’s Global Mobile Broadband Speed Index Due to Inconsistent Data

Nepal has been removed from Ookla’s global mobile broadband speed index since June 2024, citing inconsistent and highly variable mobile internet speeds. Despite this, Nepal remains listed in the fixed-broadband speed index.

Ookla’s removal follows the enforcement of its Precision Threshold rule, which requires that average download speeds over a rolling three-month period stay within ±5% variance to be considered reliable. Nepal’s mobile networks, operated by Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell, showed large discrepancies in speed test results, leading to exclusion from the mobile broadband rankings.

However, Nepal continues to rank 90th in the global fixed-broadband index as of May 2025, with average download speeds of 76.14 Mbps, upload speeds of 60.59 Mbps, and low latency of 5 ms. The country’s fiber internet market growth, driven by providers like CG Net, has boosted fixed broadband speeds substantially.

Nepal’s return to the mobile broadband index will depend on the stabilization and consistency of mobile data speeds reflected in Ookla’s measurements.
