Ghanaian Telecom Companies Increase Data Bundles by 10%-15% Following Government Directive

Telecommunication providers in Ghana have begun rolling out increased data allocations as part of a government-led initiative to improve internet affordability and digital inclusion. Effective July 1, 2025, customers across networks now receive between 10% and 15% more data at no additional cost.

This policy, driven by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, addresses public concerns over high data prices and aims to alleviate financial burdens on consumers while expanding access to digital services nationwide.

Data Increases by Network:

  • MTN has boosted data volumes by 15% across all packages, including reintroducing its GHC399 plan with 214GB, up from the previous 92.88GB under the GHC350 plan.
  • Telecel and AirtelTigo (AT) each implemented a 10% increase in their data bundle allocations.
  • High-value bundles saw significant enhancements: AT’s GHC400 package now offers 236GB (up from 195GB), while Telecel’s GHC400 package surged to 250GB, up from 90GB.

Minister Sam George tasked the National Communications Authority (NCA) with ensuring full compliance among telecom operators and warned of regulatory sanctions for non-compliance. “This is about fairness and inclusion. Every Ghanaian deserves affordable access to digital services,” he said.

Ahead of the official launch, telecom operators notified customers via SMS and app alerts about the enhanced bundles. The move has been welcomed by consumer rights groups and digital advocacy organizations as a positive step toward a more consumer-friendly telecom sector.
