Telecom Egypt and subsea supplier SubCom announced the successful completion of two landings for the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 (SEA-ME-WE-6) subsea cable system on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast in Port Said and Red Sea coast in Ras Ghareb. Telecom Egypt has established diverse terrestrial crossing routes between these landing stations, ensuring resilient connectivity across Egypt.
Mohamed Nasr, MD and CEO of Telecom Egypt, highlighted that these landings link the Red Sea and Mediterranean segments via two unique trans-Egypt terrestrial routes. He emphasized the importance of the Eurasia route connecting Southeast Asia and Europe for telecom traffic and the ongoing development of new routes to enhance connectivity between Singapore and Egypt with increased capacity and diversity.
The 21,700-km SEA-ME-WE-6 cable, stretching from Tuas in Singapore to Marseille, France, includes 17 landing points across Bahrain, Bangladesh, Djibouti, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. It features a total design capacity of 126 Tbps.
Besides Telecom Egypt, the cable consortium includes major telecom and technology companies such as Bharti Airtel, Microsoft, Orange, Singtel, Telekom Malaysia, and others. Batelco owns landing points in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE, as well as additional fiber pairs between Bahrain and Oman.
SEA-ME-WE-6 is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026, providing enhanced connectivity and capacity between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
