Algeria Boosts Intra-African Trade with Infrastructure Projects Under AfCFTA

Algeria is aiming to expand its share of intra-African trade by capitalizing on opportunities from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), said Foreign Trade and Export Promotion Minister Kamal Rezig during the Algeria Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2025 Business Roadshow.

Rezig highlighted key cross-border infrastructure projects designed to improve continental connectivity, including the Trans-Sahara Highway, the Zouerate Road linking Algeria’s Tindouf region to Mauritania, and the Nigeria-Algeria gas pipeline accompanied by a parallel fiber optic corridor.

The fourth edition of the IATF, led by Afreximbank, will be hosted in Algiers from September 4 to 10, 2025.

Afreximbank’s Director of Trade, Investment, and Financial Cooperation, Ayman El-Zoghby, confirmed the bank’s interest in financing the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, which will connect gas fields in Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria to supply Europe. The bank has committed to supporting the project through direct discussions with Algerian authorities.

In February 2025, Algeria signed three agreements with Nigeria and Niger to accelerate the 4,000-kilometre pipeline’s development, covering feasibility studies, financial arrangements, and confidentiality protocols concerning technical data.

Separately, Morocco has completed preliminary feasibility and engineering studies for a planned pipeline to transport Nigerian gas to Europe through its territory, according to a May 2025 report by Zawya Projects.
