Google Pay Launches in Oman and Lebanon, Expanding Digital Payment Options

Google has introduced Google Pay (also known as Google Wallet) in Oman and Lebanon, enabling Android users to make secure contactless payments in stores, apps, and on the web. Cardholders can store credit or debit cards digitally within Google Wallet, which uses virtual card numbers (tokens) and dynamic security codes to enhance transaction safety.

In Oman, Google Pay supports purchases through websites and mobile apps, though features like peer-to-peer transfers and service payments are not yet available. Currently, only Sohar International Bank offers Google Pay for its international debit, credit, and prepaid cardholders, allowing contactless payments via Android phones running version 9 or higher.

This launch follows Oman’s earlier adoption of Apple Pay in 2024, joining other GCC countries offering mobile payments. Unlike Samsung Pay, Google Pay is accessible to all compatible Android devices.

Mohammed bin Saif al Manji of TechOneFive highlighted the growing momentum of digital payments in Oman, crediting the Central Bank of Oman’s initiatives promoting cashless transactions. The introduction of Google Pay complements existing solutions, empowering consumers to pay seamlessly with smartphones and smartwatches, supporting Oman Vision 2040’s goals for digital transformation and economic modernization.
