Algeria Integrates Start-ups into Major Infrastructure Projects to Boost Innovation

Algeria is leveraging its growing start-up ecosystem to modernize infrastructure and enhance national innovation. On July 9, the government established a joint commission between the Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups, and Micro-enterprises to involve start-ups in large-scale projects such as railways, guided transport, and smart construction management.

The collaboration aims to create a structured framework for start-ups to contribute early in planning, monitoring, and execution through exchange platforms and co-development workshops. This approach emphasizes digital innovation, applied research, and knowledge management to embed agile, local, and cost-effective solutions into national infrastructure.

This initiative builds on Algeria’s 2020 knowledge economy strategy, which includes a dedicated Ministry for Start-ups, a “Start-up” label, the Algerian Start-up Fund, and incubators. Algeria currently hosts 5,000 to 8,000 start-ups, with over 1,200 officially labeled by the National Labeling Commission.

By integrating start-ups into strategic infrastructure projects, Algeria aims to foster homegrown innovation, reduce technological dependence, build national capacity, create skilled jobs, and support entrepreneurship aligned with domestic market needs.
