Iraq is progressing with efforts to introduce Apple Pay as part of a broader push to modernize its financial infrastructure and expand digital services. According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), a government committee responsible for activating Apple Pay recently held a virtual meeting with Apple’s regional managers to discuss the technical and administrative requirements for launching the service in Iraq.
The discussions included integration with Iraq’s national electronic payment system. Separately, Al-Sharqiya TV reported that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has officially ordered the rollout of Apple Pay across the country.
A government source cited by the outlet highlighted that this initiative aligns with Iraq’s digital transformation agenda, aiming to develop the electronic payments sector and enhance financial inclusion. Technical and operational preparations are underway to ensure Apple Pay’s availability to Iraqi users.
A follow-up meeting with Apple officials is scheduled in the coming weeks to finalize technical arrangements. If launched successfully, Iraq will join other Middle Eastern nations in offering Apple Pay, allowing secure, contactless payments via iPhone and Apple Watch.
