U Mobile Signs MoU with Melaka ICT Holdings to Accelerate 5G Deployment in Malacca

Malaysian telecom operator U Mobile, the country’s second licensed 5G provider, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-owned Melaka ICT Holdings (MICTH) to fast-track the expansion of its 5G network across Malacca.

Under the agreement, MICTH will grant U Mobile access to its tower and site infrastructure within the state, alongside comprehensive support to speed up site deployments. Both parties will collaborate to establish streamlined processes for efficient 5G rollout, aiming to broaden and accelerate network coverage.

U Mobile CTO Woon Ooi Yuen stated the partnership will help the telco reach its nationwide goal of covering 80% of populated areas with 5G by the second half of 2026, enhancing connectivity for both consumers and enterprises in Malacca.

At the MoU signing, Malacca Chief Minister Ab Rauf bin Yusoh noted that current 4G and 5G coverage in the state stands at 99.97% and 89.7% of the population, respectively, with average speeds exceeding 121 Mbps. The state aims to achieve 100% coverage for both networks by 2027.
