The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has issued a strict warning against the unauthorized termination of international A2P (Application to Person) SMS within Nepal. The regulator emphasized that only licensed companies—those holding Basic Telephone and Mobile Service and International Trunk Telephone (ILD) licenses—are permitted to provide SMS termination services under the Telecom Act 2053. Despite this, some unlicensed organizations have been found terminating A2P SMS using networks of licensed Nepali service providers.
NTA has announced its intent to take legal action against any individuals or organizations involved in this illegitimate activity and urged all concerned parties to cease unauthorized SMS termination immediately. This is part of broader enforcement efforts by the authority, which recently issued warnings against illegal satellite internet provision in Nepal’s upper regions and discouraged the use of mobile signal boosters near the Nepal-India border.
The authority stressed the risks posed by unlicensed communication providers, including security concerns and lack of accountability in case of service failures. Users are advised to exercise caution and rely only on licensed operators for communication services, as mandated by the Telecom Act 2053.
