An Iraqi mobile application, Mofid, has introduced a new online reservation system providing free overnight accommodation for pilgrims participating in the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage to Karbala. The initiative aims to enhance comfort and safety for millions of visitors during this significant religious event.
Mohammad Al-Mousawi, executive director of Mofid, explained that the platform leverages community resources and digital infrastructure to offer pilgrims secure and reliable lodging. The service can accommodate up to 75,000 pilgrims nightly and features instant messaging with automatic translation, 24/7 technical support, and availability in six international languages.
Pilgrims from over 25 countries have already registered, with expectations for host and participant numbers to grow in the coming days. The Arbaeen pilgrimage commemorates the 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein (AS), drawing millions to his shrine in Karbala.
Traditionally, thousands of moukebs (roadside service stations) and Iraqi families provide free meals, medical care, and lodging during the event. The Mofid app now offers a streamlined way for pilgrims to book free accommodations directly via their mobile devices.
