Algerian authorities have officially banned the use, creation, exchange, and storage of cryptocurrencies under Law No. 25-10, effective immediately. The law prohibits all transactions, issuance, mining, operation of crypto exchanges, e-wallets, and any related advertising or informational activities, aiming to combat money laundering and terrorism financing.
Violations carry severe penalties, including imprisonment from two months to one year and fines ranging from 200,000 to 1,000,000 Algerian dinars (approximately $1,540 to $7,700), with possible simultaneous application of both.
This move strengthens Algeria’s long-standing strict stance on cryptocurrencies, which began with a 2018 ban lacking enforceable penalties. The new law closes enforcement gaps by criminalizing all crypto-related activities, placing Algeria among nine countries globally with a full crypto ban.
