The Sultanate of Oman has officially selected ‘Shahin’ as the name for its unified national application for charging electric vehicles (EVs), following a public survey conducted by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT).
The application will serve as a centralized platform integrating all EV charging operators in the country, allowing users to access charging services seamlessly under one umbrella. Supervised by MTCIT, the platform is part of the government’s broader strategy to support green mobility and net-zero emissions goals.
Oman’s transition is already underway, with the first hydrogen fueling station launched this year and government fleets being gradually replaced with electric vehicles. MTCIT has also announced plans for a green corridors project for hydrogen-powered trucks.
Future expansion of the Shahin app could include integration with Gulf countries, supporting regional cooperation on sustainable transportation.
The naming survey offered options such as EVNet OM, NEVO, EV-Go OM, ECO, and EV Connect OM, while also allowing participants to suggest alternatives. ‘Shahin’—a name rooted in regional identity and symbolism—was ultimately selected as the winner.
Oman has achieved notable milestones in sustainable mobility, including:
- Over 150 EV chargers installed nationwide by the end of 2024.
- Deployment of biofuels in public transport.
- Smart systems to reduce emissions.
- Pilot hydrogen-powered vehicles and electrification of port equipment.
- A growing EV market, with over 1,500 registered vehicles in 2024.
