WTO Praises Morocco’s Leadership in Global Trade and Sustainable Development

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has spotlighted Morocco’s contributions to the multilateral trading system in two key reports released this month, acknowledging the Kingdom’s active role and positive influence since the signing of the 1994 Marrakech Agreement, which established the WTO.

Engagement in Global Trade Debates
In its 2024 trade policy review, the WTO commended Morocco for its dynamic participation in global discussions on plastic pollution, environmental sustainability, investment facilitation, SME support, and services trade. Morocco’s practical initiatives were highlighted as examples of how trade can be harnessed to drive local development and social empowerment.

Empowering Women Through Trade
The WTO’s annual report featured the Doum for Women cooperative in Marrakech as a flagship success story. Employing more than 250 rural women, the cooperative produces eco-friendly artisanal goods for international markets, showcasing Morocco’s model of using trade to empower women and promote sustainability.

Showcasing Morocco’s Global Role
Morocco was also selected for the WTO’s “Tracing the Spirit of Marrakesh” video series, which highlights inspiring trade-driven initiatives while reaffirming the country’s historic and ongoing role in global trade governance.

Support and Future Opportunities
Although Africa recorded weak merchandise trade growth in 2024, Morocco stands to benefit from several WTO programs, including Aid for Trade, the Fund for Women Exporters in the Digital Economy, and capacity-building initiatives for government officials.

Key developments noted in the reports include:

  • Digital commerce regulations that could cut global trade costs by $125 billion annually, boosting Morocco’s digital economy.
  • The extension of the moratorium on e-transmission duties until 2026, supporting digital trade expansion.
  • The Investment Facilitation for Development Agreement, backed by nearly 90 developing nations, designed to attract foreign investment for sustainable projects.

Together, these recognitions underscore Morocco’s role as both a foundational and forward-looking actor in global trade, committed to balancing economic growth with sustainability and inclusivity.
