Spain Awards Vodafone UK Contract to Support Gibraltar Strait Tunnel Study

Rabat — Spain has awarded Vodafone UK a communications services contract to support the team of experts studying the long-discussed tunnel project linking Spain and Morocco through the Gibraltar Strait.

According to Spanish media, the agreement was signed in mid-August and will provide voice and data communications for a group of around 15 specialists tasked with reviving the mega-infrastructure proposal, which has been under consideration for more than four decades.

The two-year contract is valued at about €24,000 annually (rising to more than €29,000 including taxes). It covers a 1-gigabit network, a 24-hour surveillance system, and a full suite of equipment and services — including landlines, mobile phones, smart devices, and technical support — to ensure uninterrupted operations for the research team.

The Gibraltar Strait tunnel project, long seen as an ambitious vision to physically connect Europe and Africa, remains in the feasibility and planning stage, with Spain and Morocco continuing to explore its technical and economic viability.
