The Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL) has unveiled plans to construct more than 1,400 communication towers nationwide to boost network coverage and support the country’s transition to a digital economy. The announcement was made by TTCL Director General Moremi Marwa during the CEOs Forum 2025 in Arusha, which brought together over 650 senior executives from 300+ public institutions.
The rollout will begin with 626 towers in the 2025/2026 financial year, all expected to be operational by June 2026, followed by another 850 towers in 2026/2027. More than 100 towers have already been completed since the program launched six months ago.
Marwa emphasized that the initiative focuses on rural and underserved regions often overlooked by private operators due to low commercial viability. Backed by significant government investment, the new towers will be integrated into the National ICT Broadband Backbone, of which TTCL is the sole owner, ensuring reliable, high-speed internet services.
This expansion aligns with Tanzania’s National Digital Strategy (2024) and Development Vision 2050, which seeks to transform the nation into a high-income economy worth US$1 trillion, achieve 90% electricity access, ensure universal clean water, and rank among Africa’s top three destinations for investment and ease of doing business.
