Iraq’s Federal Board of Supreme Audit has disclosed that two of the country’s largest telecom operators, Asiacell and Zain Iraq, have accumulated debts amounting to hundreds of billions of Iraqi dinars owed to the state. The findings were revealed in an official document covering liabilities as of the end of June 2025.
According to the report, Asiacell’s outstanding debt stands at 55.59 billion Iraqi dinars. Zain Iraq owes even more, with total liabilities of approximately 100.28 billion dinars, plus an additional $4.76 million in unpaid dues. Combined, Zain Iraq’s debt exceeds 105.58 billion dinars, pushing the total owed by the two operators to more than 161 billion dinars.
The audit report did not outline how the government intends to recover these debts or whether legal measures will be pursued against the companies. The revelation underscores the financial pressures facing Iraq’s telecom sector and raises questions about compliance and regulatory enforcement.
