Iraq Partners with Nokia to Build First Government-Owned Data Centers in Baghdad

Iraq’s Ministry of Communications has signed a landmark agreement with global telecom giant Nokia to establish the country’s first government-owned data centers in the capital. The project will see the construction of two state-of-the-art facilities: one at the Al Intisar site and another at the Al Rasheed exchange in Baghdad’s Al Senak district.

Built to international standards, the centers will store and manage data domestically, under Iraqi oversight, serving both government institutions and private sector clients. Officials emphasized that this move will help safeguard citizens’ and companies’ data while supporting Iraq’s broader digital transformation.

Communications Minister Hiyam Al Yasiri described the initiative as a cornerstone of Iraq’s modernization drive, noting that secure, advanced data centers are vital to complement ongoing fiber optic expansion and the delivery of faster internet services.

Nokia, which has previously supported Iraq by building a data center for the Ministry of Planning’s national census, said the new facilities will strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure. They are expected to bolster e-government services, enhance governance, and improve Iraq’s capacity to process and store information with cutting-edge global technologies.
