World Bank Approves $100M Digital Zambia Acceleration Project

The World Bank Group has approved the Digital Zambia Acceleration Project (DZAP), a $100 million initiative designed to expand access to affordable internet, enhance digital services, and promote inclusion across Zambia. The project places a strong emphasis on empowering women, youth, people with disabilities, and other underserved communities through better access to digital public services.

Structured around four pillars, DZAP will: extend affordable broadband and improve the enabling environment; create interoperable and secure platforms to support e-government and regional trade; promote high-impact digital services in key sectors such as agriculture, education, and health; and strengthen programme management and capacity building to ensure effective delivery.

The project is supported by an International Development Association (IDA) grant as part of the Inclusive Digitalisation in Eastern and Southern Africa (IDEA) programme, which also includes Angola, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and COMESA. By investing in digital infrastructure and skills, the initiative is expected to foster regional integration and inclusive digital economies.

World Bank officials stress that Zambia’s youth stand to gain significantly from digital skills development supported by DZAP, preparing them for employment opportunities in a growing digital economy. The project aligns with Zambia’s Vision 2030 and the World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework (FY25–29), which prioritize job creation, human capital development, and climate resilience.
