5G Reaches New Heights: Turkcell Conducts First Field Test at 1,250 Meters in Kaçkar Mountains

Rize, Türkiye – September 30, 2025 – Turkcell has marked a major milestone in Türkiye’s communications history by conducting the country’s first 5G field test at an altitude of 1,250 meters during the world-renowned Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) ultramarathon in the Kaçkar Mountains. The achievement showcased Turkcell’s readiness to deliver 5G technology in challenging natural conditions and large-scale sporting events.

The Kaçkar Mountains hosted over 2,000 athletes from 55 countries as part of the UTMB World Series, with races covering 50km and 20km routes across 12 plateaus. The Ayder Plateau served as the main event hub. This was the first time UTMB was held in Türkiye, and it will continue in the Kaçkar Mountains for the next five years, boosting both the region’s global visibility and sports tourism.

Turkcell General Manager Dr. Ali Taha Koç, who joined the 20km run alongside Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak, highlighted the company’s 13 billion TL contribution to social benefit projects in the past decade, with sports as a core focus area. He described the high-altitude 5G test as proof of Turkcell’s ability to deliver advanced connectivity in all environments—from city centers to rugged mountain trails.

Another first at the event was Turkcell’s athlete tracking system, which used GPS devices and Turkcell’s digital infrastructure to monitor participants’ safety, progress, and performance in real time. The system ensured rapid emergency response capabilities while providing unique insights into the athletes’ journey.

“Sports hold a special place for us, and being the technology partner of UTMB reflects our commitment to innovation, connectivity, and community impact,” said Dr. Koç. “Our 5G test at Kaçkar shows that we are ready to deliver the highest quality technology in every condition—urban, rural, or extreme.”
