Visakhapatnam — Global tech giant Google has announced plans to invest $15 billion to build a large-scale AI and data centre hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest-ever investment in India. The project, unveiled at the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi, aims to accelerate AI-driven transformation across India and strengthen U.S.–India technology cooperation.
The new hub will combine AI infrastructure, hyperscale data centres, renewable energy systems, and an expanded fibre-optic network into a single integrated ecosystem. Backed by partners AdaniConneX and Airtel, the development will include a gigawatt-scale data campus designed to meet surging demand for AI compute capacity and cloud services.
According to Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, “The Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam represents a landmark investment in India’s digital future. By delivering industry-leading AI infrastructure at scale, we’re enabling businesses to innovate faster and fostering inclusive growth.”
Strategic and Economic Impact
The hub is projected to generate $15 billion in U.S. GDP between 2026 and 2030 through expanded AI collaboration and cloud-based economic activity. For India, it establishes Visakhapatnam as the country’s first gigawatt-scale data and AI hub, contributing to the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and supporting initiatives under the India AI Mission.
India’s Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the move, noting that “AI services are emerging as a new category in our digital economy. This facility will help train and upskill our youth while strengthening India’s global leadership in AI.”
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu added, “We are proud to host India’s first gigawatt-scale data centre and Google’s first AI hub in the country. It reflects our shared commitment to innovation and long-term digital transformation.”
Infrastructure and Connectivity Expansion
The project also includes a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam that will connect to Google’s global subsea cable network spanning over two million miles. This will create new high-capacity, low-latency pathways that enhance India’s digital resilience and expand global connectivity beyond existing hubs in Mumbai and Chennai.
The data centre campus, once operational, will join Google’s global network of AI hubs in 12 countries, leveraging innovations from R&D teams in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune.
Accelerating AI Transformation in India
This initiative reinforces Google’s commitment to helping India harness AI for economic growth, digital inclusion, and global competitiveness. By combining next-generation infrastructure with advanced connectivity, the Visakhapatnam hub will enable businesses, researchers, and startups to scale AI solutions more efficiently — powering the next phase of India’s digital and economic evolution.
