The Libyan International Telecommunications Company (LITC), a subsidiary of the Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Company (LPTIC), participated in the official ceremony announcing the arrival of the Medusa Submarine Cable in Marseille, marking a major step in strengthening Libya’s global digital connectivity.
The event celebrated the cable’s first landing point in the initial phase of the project, which is on track to link the southern and northern Mediterranean through a modern, high-capacity communications network. LPTIC emphasized that Libya’s participation demonstrates its commitment to enhancing international cooperation, developing telecom infrastructure, and expanding regional and international connectivity.
Stretching 8,700 kilometers, the Medusa Submarine Cable includes 19 landing points across the Mediterranean’s southern and northern coasts, extending to the Atlantic Ocean and Lisbon. It is one of the most ambitious projects designed to boost digital interconnection between Europe and North Africa.
The project aligns with Libya’s vision to become a regional digital hub, facilitating data flow between Europe and Africa. According to Ibrahim Rehab, General Manager of the Libyan United International Company (LUIC) — one of the private entities involved — Libya’s participation will enable the nation to export telecom services to African countries, reinforcing its position as a digital gateway to Africa.
Rehab added that the initiative supports Libya’s digital transformation agenda by diversifying communications infrastructure and improving security and service resilience.
The Medusa project, inaugurated in Misrata in May 2025, was initially formalized through a contract signing in Tripoli in November 2023. Once fully operational, it is expected to deliver high-capacity, secure, and scalable connectivity, strengthening Libya’s role in international data traffic and advancing economic and technological integration across the Mediterranean.
