Egypt’s Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MoETE), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Akelius Foundation have launched a two-year partnership to expand inclusive learning opportunities for children across Egypt, particularly those in vulnerable and marginalized communities.
The initiative will equip schools with digital tools, train 450 educators, and strengthen literacy and digital learning among children with disabilities, refugees, and underserved groups. It aims to ensure that every child—regardless of background—has access to quality, inclusive education.
At the heart of the programme is the Akelius Digital Language Application, which uses interactive multimedia content to teach English and Arabic. The platform allows students to learn at their own pace while enabling teachers to personalize lesson plans and track progress in real time.
“Every child deserves the chance to learn, no matter who they are or where they come from. Through this partnership, we are harnessing digital tools to empower teachers and create inclusive, engaging classrooms,” said Shiraz Chakera, Chief of Education, UNICEF Egypt.
Over its duration, the programme will directly benefit 7,500 children—with a focus on girls and children with disabilities—and indirectly impact around 30,000 family members through community outreach.
Kerstin Ekström, representing the Akelius Foundation, highlighted the global success of the foundation’s approach:
“For over a decade, Akelius Languages has helped vulnerable children learn in twenty countries. Bringing this to Egypt is a vital step in ensuring every child can build literacy skills and a brighter future.”
Ahead of the 2025/2026 academic year, eight rounds of training have been completed across Aswan, Cairo, Giza, and Sharqia, preparing 250 teachers to integrate the digital package into classroom learning. Schools and community learning spaces have also been upgraded to foster inclusive and technology-enabled environments.
This partnership marks a major milestone in Egypt’s education reform efforts, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to digital inclusion, equity, and lifelong learning opportunities for all children.
