Ericsson and Saudi Railway Company Partner to Pioneer 5G-Powered Rail Operations in Saudi Arabia

RIYADH – October 27, 2025: Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications giant, has signed an agreement with the Saudi Railway Company (SAR) to deploy 5G-powered rail communication systems, marking a major step toward modernizing Saudi Arabia’s transportation infrastructure in line with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030.

The partnership aims to revolutionize rail operations by integrating advanced 5G and Future Railway Mobile Communication Systems (FRMCS) technologies, enhancing reliability, safety, and passenger connectivity across the Kingdom’s growing rail network.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Ericsson will provide end-to-end support, including 5G infrastructure deployment, FRMCS solutions, and technical expertise to strengthen SAR’s operational communication systems.

Driving Innovation in Rail Technology

The collaboration will enable mission-critical 5G capabilities to ensure secure, high-performance communications for rail control and operations. Ericsson and SAR will jointly develop FRMCS-based use cases, as well as high-speed broadband (Gigabit train) services for passengers, providing enhanced onboard connectivity and real-time digital experiences.

A test lab and innovation center will also be established to validate 5G rail applications, including train control, staff communication, real-time video streaming, and IoT integration. The center will serve as a hub for testing and training SAR’s workforce in next-generation rail communication technologies.

Additionally, the partnership includes trial deployments on existing rail lines, where Ericsson’s 5G and FRMCS systems will be evaluated for real-world performance and interoperability.

Empowering Digital Transformation in Transport

By integrating 5G into railway operations, the partnership is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency, predictive maintenance, and passenger experience, contributing to the Kingdom’s goal of creating a digitally enabled and sustainable transportation ecosystem.

The Ericsson–SAR collaboration underscores how 5G can transform the railway industry, positioning Saudi Arabia as a regional leader in smart mobility infrastructure. Together, the two organizations are laying the foundation for a connected, efficient, and innovation-driven rail network that aligns with the Kingdom’s broader digital transformation goals.
