Iraq Connects 2,500 Schools to Free High-Speed Fiber Internet

Iraq’s Ministry of Communications has successfully provided free, high-speed fiber optic internet to more than 2,500 schools across Baghdad and other governorates, according to Minister Hiyam Al-Yasiri. The initiative is a key milestone in Iraq’s national digital transformation and education modernization agenda.

During a field visit to schools in Karkh and Rusafa, Al-Yasiri confirmed that over 550 schools in Karkh and 350 in Rusafa have already been connected, with selection based on proximity to existing fiber optic routes. The Ministry has also extended internet service hours for institutions operating double shifts to ensure uninterrupted access for all students.

The project forms part of the government’s broader plan to construct 1,000 model schools equipped with digital infrastructure, smart boards, and e-learning systems — a joint effort between the Ministries of Communications and Education under the supervision of the Prime Minister’s office.

Addressing technical challenges such as weak signals in large or multi-story buildings, Al-Yasiri directed specialized teams to reinforce connectivity. She further urged schools to expand internet use beyond administrative offices to include students, enabling richer, more practical learning experiences.

This initiative underscores Iraq’s commitment to integrating technology into education, supporting digital inclusion, and building a knowledge-driven society.
