Islamabad — October 30, 2025:
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an urgent advisory warning the public about a surge in online job scams and SIM card fraud targeting unsuspecting citizens. Cybercriminals are reportedly exploiting social media platforms and street-level sales to steal personal data, biometric information, and money.
Online Job Scams on the Rise
PTA reports a sharp increase in fake online job listings promising high salaries, flexible work hours, and remote opportunities. Scammers often impersonate legitimate companies or create fraudulent online surveys to extract personal details, including photos, contact information, and even location data.
The authority urges job seekers to verify all employment opportunities through official company websites or recruitment portals before sharing any information. “Personal safety must always come before any financial gain,” PTA emphasized, urging citizens to remain vigilant.
SIM Card Fraud and Biometric Data Theft
In major cities, street vendors are offering “free SIM cards” or fake financial aid schemes, particularly targeting women and senior citizens. PTA warns that these offers are often a front for biometric data theft, where scammers capture fingerprints, thumb impressions, and CNIC details for fraudulent activities.
Illegally obtained SIM cards are being used for identity theft, financial fraud, and cybercrime. PTA reminded the public that sharing a SIM card registered in one’s name is a punishable offense and urged citizens not to disclose personal or biometric data to unverified individuals or entities.
Recent Case Highlights Growing Threat
A recent incident in Hyderabad saw a citizen lose Rs 85,000 after fraudsters cloned his SIM card and gained access to his bank account, conducting multiple unauthorized transactions. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has launched an investigation into the case, working with the affected bank and telecom provider to trace the perpetrators.
Public Advisory
Experts warn that such scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, exploiting weaknesses in telecom verification systems. PTA has called on telecom operators to strengthen identity verification mechanisms and encouraged the public to immediately report suspicious activity via the PTA complaint system or cybercrime helpline.
