Morocco Expands 5G to 60 Cities and Makes Fiber Optic Mandatory in All New Buildings

Morocco’s nationwide digital infrastructure push is accelerating, with 5G services now live in around 60 cities just one week after launch by Maroc Telecom, Orange Morocco, and Inwi. Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni confirmed that fiber optic connectivity is now mandatory in all new construction projects under a joint ministerial decree adopted in September.

The rollout includes 6,000 active base stations, set to rise to 8,200 by the end of December. Operators have already connected 7 million 5G-compatible devices, signaling rapid adoption. More than 100 commercial offers have been introduced across prepaid and postpaid plans, with higher data allowances at no added cost. Prepaid packages now provide 11GB for MAD 50 — up from 5GB — while postpaid plans offer at least 20% more data.

The upgrades also extend to 4G services, including bundled access to streaming platforms such as Netflix, music services, educational content, and region-specific add-ons like beIN Sports and Glovo Prime. Nearly 4 million FTTH connections are already active, with pricing down 20% and gigabit-speed plans now available.

By 2026, 6,300 government sites are expected to be connected to fiber networks. The minister emphasized that infrastructure deployment is based on readiness rather than geography, ensuring equal focus on rural and urban regions. The 5G launch and fiber mandate are key milestones in delivering the “Morocco Digital 2030” strategy, targeting 70% 5G coverage and 5.6 million fiber-connected homes by decade’s end. The initiative is also tied to national goals around digital sovereignty, renewable-powered data centers, and secure cloud access.
