Omantel has launched a new regional Managed Optical Fibre Network (MOFN) built in collaboration with Zain Group and Zain Omantel International (ZOI), using advanced optical solutions from Ciena. The service, designed and operated by Omantel, offers dedicated, high-performance connectivity tailored for hyperscalers, cloud providers, and large enterprises with demanding digital workloads.
Powered by Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 coherent optics, the MOFN supports speeds of up to 1.6 Tbps per wavelength across both C and L bands, enabling high-capacity, scalable transport for AI workloads, hyperscale applications, and data centre interconnects. The network is engineered for dynamic scalability, real-time SLA monitoring, bandwidth-on-demand, and automated provisioning, giving enterprises full control and visibility while Omantel manages the infrastructure end-to-end.
Omantel’s extensive fibre backbone connects major international cable landing stations and carrier-neutral data centres such as MC1 in Muscat and Equinix SN1 in Salalah, creating a resilient foundation for regional and global traffic. Through its partnership with Zain and ZOI, Omantel extends this reach across multiple regional markets, offering a unified, fully managed service model for international capacity and multi-country connectivity.
Omantel’s chief tech and digital officer, Samy Ahmed Al Ghassany, said the MOFN provides hyperscalers with flexible, intelligent connectivity that scales instantly without infrastructure complexity. Ciena’s Thomas Soerensen added that the initiative strengthens Oman’s position as a strategic digital gateway linking Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe.
