Morocco expands 5G rollout to 60 cities within one week of commercial launch

Morocco’s commercial 5G rollout has reached 60 cities just one week after going live on November 7, according to data shared with Hespress by a senior official. Operators have already activated 6,000 ground stations across the covered regions, with the number expected to rise to 8,200 by the end of December—a deployment pace described as exceptional given that 5G licenses were issued only three and a half months earlier.

Around seven million active devices—including smartphones and tablets—are already connected to the new network, signalling rapid consumer adoption. Morocco’s three operators—Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc and Inwi—have introduced 100 commercial 5G offers so far, with significantly expanded data allowances. For example, previous plans offered 5GB for 50 dirhams, while current 5G plans now provide 11GB for the same price. Postpaid plans have also seen at least a 20% increase in data without tariff changes. All offers remain fully compatible with both 4G and 5G networks.

The rapid expansion comes as Morocco prepares to host major continental and international events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, during a period of rising investment in digital infrastructure. Fifth-generation networks can deliver speeds above 2 Gbps and will initially focus on major urban centres before expanding to additional regions. Devices and SIM cards that are 5G-compatible will connect automatically.

5G licenses were granted after the July 25 board meeting of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency and formal approval from the head of government. Operator commitments include strict targets for investment, coverage and service quality. Total deployment and operating costs are expected to reach 80 billion dirhams by 2035.
