Pakistan has expanded its global connectivity with the landing of the SEA-ME-WE 6 subsea cable, a high-capacity system linking the country to major hubs between Singapore and France. Spanning 19,200 km, the cable delivers over 100Tbps in total design capacity and offers one of the lowest-latency routes between Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe. According to the Ministry of IT and Telecommunications, the upgrade strengthens Pakistan’s position on the Asia-Europe data corridor amid rapidly rising demand for cloud, content and fintech traffic. The SEA-ME-WE 6 consortium includes Transworld Associates, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company, Bharti Airtel, Dhiraagu, Djibouti Telecom, Mobily, Orange, Singtel, Sri Lanka Telecom, Telecom Egypt, Telekom Malaysia and Telin. Built with more fibre pairs and twice the capacity of previous generations, the system also incorporates geo-diverse paths through Egypt to enhance resilience and reduce outage risks. Pakistan has been allocated 13.2Tbps on the system, with 4Tbps activated immediately—significantly boosting available international bandwidth. Officials note that this expansion will accelerate growth in cloud services, data centres, e-commerce, streaming and the broader digital economy while adding a vital redundancy layer for national and regional traffic.
