Algeria to begin 5G rollout as Mobilis, Djezzy and Ooredoo go live

Algeria’s Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has formally announced the start of 5G rollouts after issuing licences to Mobilis, Djezzy and Ooredoo. The announcement follows July’s licence decision from the Postal and Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority (ARPCE), with final confirmation published last week. The three licences cost a combined DZD63.9 billion (about US$492 million).

All three operators are now cleared to begin deploying 5G across eight pilot provinces. Under the national plan, Mobilis, Djezzy and Ooredoo must achieve nationwide coverage within six years. The operators have conducted extensive trials in coordination with ARPCE, with Ooredoo partnering with Nokia since 2023 to upgrade networks in Algeria and Tunisia, and Mobilis reporting trial downlink speeds of 1.2 Gbps earlier this year.

Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki said 5G will support Algeria’s broader strategy to modernise telecom infrastructure and accelerate digital-economy growth. The government aims to leverage AI, IoT and cloud technologies to spur innovation across healthcare, Industry 4.0, education and smart mobility.
