The UAE has issued its first official license for online gaming and sports wagering, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commercial gaming sector. The General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) licensed Play971, operated by Coin Technology Projects LLC, under both the internet gaming and sports wagering categories. This is the 19th license issued by the regulator since its establishment in September 2023.
Play971 states that it is licensed, regulated, and operated within the UAE. According to its terms and conditions, users must be at least 21 years old and physically present in the UAE to register, deposit funds, or participate. The platform prohibits the use of VPNs or other methods to conceal identity or location and applies financial eligibility checks alongside responsible gaming safeguards.
The GCGRA defines commercial gaming as any game of chance, or a mix of chance and skill, involving wagering money or cash equivalents. Regulated activities include internet gaming, sports wagering, lotteries, land-based gaming facilities, electronic and skill-based games, gaming machines, and event wagering such as sports or horse racing.
