Moroccan telecom operator INWI has announced the landing of the MEDUSA submarine cable in Nador, a move aimed at reinforcing Morocco’s international connectivity and supporting its ambition to become a regional digital hub. The landing was confirmed on December 16 and forms part of a wider Mediterranean connectivity project led by AFR-IX Telecom.
Spanning more than 8,700 kilometres, the MEDUSA cable is set to become the largest submarine connectivity system in the Mediterranean, linking 19 landing points across North Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Egypt by 2027. INWI said it has secured a high-capacity 1,416-kilometre segment connecting Nador to Marseille, with transmission speeds reaching up to 24 terabits per second under an open-access model.
According to the operator, the new route will add redundancy to Morocco’s international network, improve reliability, and enhance resilience as global data traffic continues to increase. The landing is also aligned with Morocco’s Digital 2030 strategy, which focuses on building a sovereign, inclusive digital ecosystem capable of supporting cloud services, artificial intelligence, and business transformation.
INWI said the expansion of ultra-high-speed connectivity and the creation of new routes to major global hubs will help narrow the digital divide and strengthen Morocco’s attractiveness for international technology investment
