CAIRO: Egypt is set to launch a new digital platform for Maspero as part of a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s state-owned media sector, with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly pledging full government support to revitalise the National Media Authority (NMA) and restore its regional leadership.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Madbouly, NMA Chairman Ahmed El-Moslemany outlined a series of reforms aimed at modernising Maspero’s operations and strengthening its digital presence. Central to the plan is the development of a dedicated digital platform designed to monetise Maspero’s extensive historical archives, positioning the institution for sustainable digital revenue generation.
For the first time, the NMA has also appointed a specialised firm to manage and expand its social media presence, marking a strategic shift toward professional digital engagement. Additional structural reforms include the merger of underperforming television channels, the upgrading of others, and the restructuring of Sawt Al-Qahira (Sono Cairo), one of Egypt’s key state-owned media entities.
El-Moslemany confirmed that a final and comprehensive roadmap for restructuring, efficiency, and operational reform will be presented by late January. Alongside these measures, the government is addressing long-standing financial obligations between the NMA and the National Investment Bank to ensure long-term institutional stability.
Hussein Issa, who heads the committee overseeing the reform of government authorities, said the Ministry of Finance has submitted proposals to enhance the NMA’s financial resources. The objective is to transition the authority toward financial sustainability and reduce reliance on direct state funding.
