Ethio Telecom has confirmed it is exploring a strategic cross-border partnership with Somaliland Cable (Somcable), aimed at expanding digital and telecommunications services beyond Ethiopia’s borders.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru and a delegation from Somcable, with a focus on accelerating growth in potential overseas markets through advanced digital and communication solutions. The talks align with Ethio Telecom’s long-term roadmap, “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028.”
Tamru highlighted Ethio Telecom’s institutional strength and infrastructure capabilities, reaffirming the company’s readiness to collaborate in unlocking new opportunities and driving sustainable mutual growth.
“Collaboration is instrumental to unlocking growth. This partnership enables us to share our experience and infrastructure to create shared value and advance digital empowerment across Africa,” she said.
Somcable CEO Mohammed Ibrahim Ahmed described the initiative as more than a commercial alliance. “This is a collaborative commitment to harnessing technology to unlock human potential across Ethiopia and contribute to a more connected and prosperous Africa,” he said.
Founded in 2009, Somcable has established itself as a regional connectivity player, landing two international subsea cables in Somaliland in May 2022: the 2Africa cable and the PEACE cable. These assets position the company as a strategic gateway for regional and international data traffic.
The potential partnership reflects a broader trend of African operators seeking regional integration to strengthen digital infrastructure, expand market reach, and enable cross-border digital services.
