Ethio Telecom has confirmed it is in discussions with Somaliland-based telecoms provider and ISP Somaliland Cable (Somcable) to explore a strategic cross-border digital and telecommunications partnership.
Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru met with a Somcable delegation to discuss accelerating growth in overseas markets through advanced digital and communication solutions, in line with Ethio Telecom’s long-term strategic direction.
During the meeting, Tamru outlined Ethio Telecom’s institutional strengths and infrastructure capabilities, reaffirming the company’s readiness to collaborate with Somcable to unlock new opportunities and drive sustainable mutual growth under its “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy.
“Collaboration is instrumental to unlocking growth. This partnership enables us to share our experience and infrastructure to create shared value and advance digital empowerment across Africa,” Tamru said.
Somcable CEO Mohammed Ibrahim Ahmed described the talks as a broader commitment to regional development, stating that the potential partnership aims to harness technology to unlock human potential across Ethiopia and contribute to a more connected and prosperous Africa.
Founded in 2009, Somcable operates two international subsea cable landings in Somaliland — the 2Africa and PEACE cables — both commissioned in May 2022, strengthening the region’s international connectivity.
