DHAKA, Feb 9, 2026 — Bangladesh’s interim government has developed a comprehensive legal framework covering data protection and cyber governance, aimed at strengthening the country’s digital regulatory environment and ensuring responsible data management across sectors.
Speaking at a high-level seminar titled “Personal Data Protection Ordinance, 2025: Framework, Insights and Practical Implications” in Dhaka, Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said the framework was prepared within a short period through consultations with local and international stakeholders, including the World Bank and the European Union.
The proposed framework addresses both personal and general data protection and includes plans to establish a National Data Governance Authority to oversee data collection, processing, protection, and accountability in data exchange. According to Taiyeb, the initiative aims to build a complete data protection ecosystem supported by five legal instruments, including the Cyber Safety Ordinance, Personal Data Protection Act, Telecommunications Act, and Postal Service Ordinance.
The seminar, jointly organised by the ICT Division and the Enhancing Digital Government and Economy (EDGE) Project, brought together policymakers, ICT experts, academics, and government officials to discuss the practical implications of the proposed legislation and its role in advancing secure digital governance.
