Oman Accelerates Toward Billion-Dollar Digital Future with Massive Service Digitization

The Sultanate of Oman is rapidly transforming its economic landscape, with its digital economy evolving into a primary engine for GDP growth. According to Dr. Ali bin Amer al Shidani, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, the nation now ranks 18th globally among the fastest-growing digital economies. This progress is underscored by the digitization of over 2,000 government services between 2021 and 2025, leading to a staggering 48 million digital transactions in 2025 alone—a 78% increase over the previous year.

Oman’s strategic roadmap, the National Digital Economy Programme, aims to scale the digital sector’s contribution to the GDP from its current 2% to 3% by 2025, with a long-term target of 10% by 2040. This shift is supported by the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, which treats the digital economy as an independent pillar of national development. Beyond infrastructure, the transformation is creating significant local opportunities; in 2025, nearly 1,300 Omanis were employed in specialized IT roles across 33 technical professions, reflecting a robust surge in demand for high-tech digital skills within the local labor market.
