The volume of outgoing mobile phone calls in Morocco declined significantly in 2025 as consumers increasingly turned to internet-based messaging platforms for everyday communication, according to new data from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency.
Morocco recorded 40.9 billion minutes of outgoing mobile calls during the year, representing a 12.55% drop compared with the previous year.
The decline reflects a broader shift toward instant messaging applications, which are gradually replacing traditional voice calls.
Text messaging also continued to decrease. Around 1.54 billion SMS messages were sent in 2025, marking a 16.46% decline year-on-year.
Despite the fall in traditional communication services, the total number of mobile subscriptions increased to 59.16 million users, growing by approximately 877,000 subscribers, or 1.5%, during the year.
Prepaid services remained dominant in the market, accounting for about 50.9 million mobile subscriptions.
The fixed-line segment also recorded moderate growth. The number of fixed-line subscriptions rose by 6.3% to reach 3.23 million customers, who collectively made around 1.71 billion minutes of calls in 2025.
Morocco’s internet market continued to expand steadily. By the end of the year, the country had 41.46 million internet subscribers, representing an increase of 1.24 million new users.
The regulator also reported that Morocco’s 5G network now covers about 38% of the population and has attracted 2.63 million subscribers since its official launch on November 7.
Competition among the country’s telecom operators remains strong. Maroc Telecom holds 29.82% of the market, while the rest is shared between Wana Corporate and Orange.
Average mobile internet speeds reached 83 Mbps for downloads and 36 Mbps for uploads. Meanwhile, ADSL speeds exceeded 12 Mbps for 95% of subscribers.
The telecom regulator handled 1,655 customer complaints against operators during the year, with an average resolution time of 16 days.
Most complaints were related to service quality, contracts, billing issues and number portability. Service quality complaints accounted for 63% of the total and increased significantly during the year, rising from 145 complaints in January to 410 in December.
The report also highlighted growth in Morocco’s national domain ecosystem. The number of registered “.ma” domain names reached 133,977, an increase of 8.14%, with 38,536 new domains registered by the end of the year.
