Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Discusses Telecom Improvement and Economic Development at Advisory Meeting

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting of the Economic Advisory Council in Islamabad on Wednesday, where he emphasized his government’s efforts to improve telecommunication services and provide internet access to remote areas. The initiative aims to boost IT exports and increase the number of freelancers in Pakistan.

Sharif’s remarks came amid accusations from rights activists and the opposition, who claim that the government’s actions—such as blocking the social media platform X and banning VPNs—are designed to suppress dissent. The government’s installation of a national firewall last year to regulate online content has also faced backlash, with critics pointing to slower internet speeds, which have disrupted the work of freelancers and IT professionals across the country.

Despite these challenges, Sharif reassured that his government is committed to enhancing telecommunications infrastructure to facilitate economic growth, particularly in the IT sector. He emphasized the importance of sustainable economic development, with priorities set on advancing industry, agriculture, IT, job creation, and boosting exports.

During the meeting, Sharif praised his economic team for contributing to the country’s economic stability, citing an increase in production due to price stability. He directed relevant authorities to collaborate with the council to develop a comprehensive action plan to address the suggestions presented during the meeting.
