Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a leader in coordinating the planning, purchasing, supply, and dispatch services for water and electricity across the UAE, has announced the opening of registration for its Q1 2025 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction. The auction will close on March 14.
This initiative is in line with the UAE’s Year of Community 2025 objectives, which aim to harness the potential of individuals, families, and organizations to contribute to a sustainable future for all.
CEC units, issued by the Department of Energy (DoE) in 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) increments, are the only accredited instrument certifying the ownership of the environmental and economic benefits derived from clean energy consumption. These certificates verify that the electricity consumed by the redeeming Abu Dhabi-based entity originates from renewable or clean energy sources.
The CEC auction provides individuals, businesses, and organizations the opportunity to take measurable actions in reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to Abu Dhabi’s collective environmental sustainability.
EWEC, as the sole registrant and auction operator of the scheme, plays a vital role in supporting the implementation of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s (DoE) CEC program. The scheme adheres to internationally recognized standards set by the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard).
Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, commented, “The growing demand for Clean Energy Certificates reflects the increasing focus on sustainability and emissions reduction across Abu Dhabi. As a key enabler of the UAE’s clean energy transition, EWEC is facilitating access to renewable and clean energy while driving tangible decarbonisation outcomes.”
Brice further emphasized, “In this Year of Community, we encourage businesses, individuals, and organizations to contribute to a sustainable future that benefits both our economy and the well-being of future generations.”
Through initiatives like the CEC auctions, EWEC supports the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, enabling collective action toward achieving national sustainability goals.
In 2024, EWEC made significant progress in promoting clean energy adoption across Abu Dhabi. The introduction of wind-generated CECs was a landmark achievement, and strategic agreements with key sectors such as healthcare, utilities, and events have demonstrated widespread adoption of sustainable energy solutions to meet decarbonisation objectives. These efforts further establish Abu Dhabi as a leader in clean energy and emissions reduction across diverse industries.
