Saudi digital enabler stc Group and Ooredoo Oman have signed an agreement to establish an international terrestrial fibre optic network corridor, named the SONIC project, between Saudi Arabia and Oman. The collaboration aims to improve the region’s digital ecosystem by creating an integrated network with two redundant paths connecting submarine cable landing stations and data centres in both countries.
The project will leverage the strategic geographical positioning of Saudi Arabia and Oman to enhance connectivity and strengthen digital infrastructure. The first phase of the SONIC project, expected to be completed in 12 months, will support subsea projects and improve international subsea routes between Asia and Europe. The full project is expected to be completed within 24 months.
Mohammed Alabbadi, Group Chief Carrier & Wholesale Officer at stc Group, emphasized that the SONIC project will play a crucial role in meeting the increasing demand for regional and international connectivity through high-capacity, secure, and efficient networks.
Bassam Yousef Al Ibrahim, CEO of Ooredoo Oman, noted that the partnership will enable seamless international data flow, attract investment, and foster innovation. This collaboration aligns with Oman Vision 2040 by driving economic growth and establishing Oman as a key player in the global digital ecosystem.
